Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas continues to play for the Mercedes F1 team until the end of the 2020 season.
The Mercedes homepage announced to keep Bottas right on his 30th birthday, August 28. Team leader Toto Wolff said: “We set the goal for Bottas in the first season of 2019 to surpass the performance of the same period last year, and he did. But, Bottas still yearns for progress and improvement. “We want that spirit to be present in every team member. Bottas has played an important role in Mercedes’ recent two championships. I would like to announce Bottas will stay at least one more season.”
The Finnish driver is also happy with the new deal. “I thank the management and the team members for trusting me. My performance is getting better and I am honored to have the opportunity to play for Mercedes for the fourth season. My goal is World champions and in theory, Mercedes is the best option for me to achieve my ambition in 2020. This season has nine stages and I am trying to improve one by one. Belgium race at Spa, “he said.
Bottas joined Mercedes in 2017, replacing Nico Rosberg – the 2016 champions and retiring shortly thereafter. Bottas achieved the highest career achievement in the first half of this season. But he received a lot of criticism because the result was far behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Part of the fans wanted to replace Bottas with Esteban Ocon – Mercedes’ reserve driver this season.
In the end, Mercedes chose to trust Bottas, and Ocon will switch to Renault from 2020. Ocon will be Daniel Ricciardo’s teammate, when Nico Hulkenberg is said to be out of contract with the French racing team later this season. According to Motorsport, the only chance for Hulkenberg to stay in F1 season 2020 is Haas. You can replace Romain Grosjean – a disappointing rider during this season.
This two-season phase kicks off at the Spa track from September 1. Alexander Albon (Toro Rosso team) will switch positions with Pierre Gasly (Red Bull).
