We have all been there. Going in for your DMV test for the first time is always daunting. Even if you have gotten your learners’ permit a few months ago, and you practiced a great deal with an instructor or a parent or a friend, taking the test is a different kettle of fish. It is acceptable to get a little nervous, but you have to manage your fears so that you can perform in the right way on the test date. If you are planning on taking the test in Ohio, here are some do’s and don’ts that are going to help you get the outcome you want: your drivers’ license. Do’s:

1. Follow Instructions

The best thing you can do when you are taking your DMV test is to do everything the instructor asks, word for word. If they ask you to go a certain speed limit, do it. If they ask you to make a turn at a specific location, do not hesitate. If they ask you to parallel park at a certain spot, get it done! The more you listen and the more respectful you are in your mannerisms, the more likely you are to get favorable treatment from the testing professional.

2. Brake and Accelerate Smoothly

One of the telltale signs that someone is a novice driver is when they are too heavy on the gas and the breaks. If your instructor sees that you are giving too much acceleration when you get out of a turn, or you are applying the brake too heavily before a traffic stop, they are going to feel as if you are slightly more dangerous in the car than someone who can do these things smoothly. While it is not going to disqualify you from getting your license, it can dock you a few points. So make sure you are very smooth in your acceleration and braking, because it demonstrates that you have complete control over the car, and that you are aware of what is going on around you.

Don’ts:

1. Messing up the Parking

One of the things that most people struggle to master is parking, especially parallel parking. Now the instructor is not going to ask you to parallel park in a busy shopping mall or something of that sort, but they do want to see that you know the basics. So make sure you brush up on those skills and treat the parking portion of your test very seriously.

2. Making Dangerous Turns

Another mistake that you must not make is to try a dangerous maneuver or turn while you are on the road. Always look both ways before turning, make sure you obey stop signs and traffic lights, and do not speed excessively above the speed limit.

As long as you follow these tips, you should have no issues with passing your test and getting your license in a timely manner.
